I was glad to see an announcement on LinkedIn about a new partnership between PECB and ILSSI. This partnership could have an interesting impact on the Lean Six Sigma certification landscape.
In this post, I will outline the potential impact of this partnership, even though the two organizations haven’t disclosed the fruits of the partnership yet.
What is PECB
PECB (the Professional Evaluation and Certification Board) is one of the largest professional certification providers globally, present in more than 150 countries with the help of more than 3,300 partners.
PECB offers a broad portfolio of management system-related professional certifications, including ISO 9001 Lead Auditor, ISO 14001 Lead Implementer, and ISO 50001 Foundation.
In recent years, PECB has recognized the growing importance of data privacy and cybersecurity within the landscape of artificial intelligence. To keep pace with this rapidly evolving environment, PECB is expanding its portfolio of professional certifications in privacy information management, cybersecurity management, and artificial intelligence management, such as:
- ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Implementer
- ISO/IEC 27701 Lead Auditor
- ISO/IEC 27001 Foundation
PECB has very strong recognition by the main accreditation bodies in the United States (IAS and ANAB), the United Kingdom (UKAS), and France (COFRAC) as personnel certification body.
What is ILSSI
ILSSI (the International Lean Six Sigma Institute) is one of the most recognized accreditation bodies for Lean Six Sigma, along with ASQ (the American Society for Quality), IASSC (International Association for Six Sigma Certification), and CSSC (the Council for Six Sigma Certification).
As of today, they are actively engaging within a community of 118 partners across 48 countries and territories.
Indeed, ILSSI and ASQ are stand out for their well-established community, organizing conferences, workshops, and webinars.
While ILSSI provides the foundational Bodies of Knowledge (BoK), the organization and its accredited partners offer both combined Lean Six Sigma certifications and individual tracks. Notably, they uniquely apply the traditional belt-color system to their standalone Lean certifications as well.
Impact on PECB Lean Six Sigma Certification
Currently, PECB offers Lean Six Sigma certifications without clearly stating publicly which standardized Body of Knowledge or reference framework its certifications are based on.
Of course, PECB has its own training content and certification requirements, as every certification organization does. My point is different: I could not find a clear public statement showing that PECB’s Lean Six Sigma certification framework is aligned with an established and independently recognized Body of Knowledge or reference framework such as those defined by organizations like ASQ, ILSSI, IASSC, CSSC, or ISO.
When I first looked at PECB’s Lean Six Sigma offering, I thought ISO 18404 could be the reference, given PECB’s strong presence in the ISO certification ecosystem. However, I rapidly abandoned this hypothesis after noticing that PECB offers the Yellow Belt level, which does not exist in ISO 18404.
This lack of clarity is important because a Body of Knowledge helps standardize what candidates are expected to know at each certification level. It also gives employers and professionals a reference point for understanding what a certification actually represents and comparing it with other certifications in the market.
This is where the new partnership with ILSSI could become particularly interesting.
If ILSSI contributes its Lean Six Sigma accreditation framework, Body of Knowledge, or other technical expertise to PECB’s existing certification ecosystem, the partnership could help PECB further standardize and strengthen its Lean Six Sigma certification offering.
The impact could be significant for PECB’s training partners around the world. A clearly defined and standardized framework would help training providers deliver consistent content and certification preparation across different markets.
For candidates, this could make the decision to enroll easier because the certification program, learning requirements, and expected competencies would be more transparent and easier to compare with other established Lean Six Sigma certifications.
In other words, the potential value of this partnership is not simply adding another Lean Six Sigma certification to PECB’s portfolio. It could combine PECB’s international certification network with ILSSI’s specialized Lean Six Sigma accreditation framework and expertise.
Impact on ILSSI
ILSSI could also benefit significantly from this partnership.
By partnering with PECB, an internationally established professional certification organization with a large global network, ILSSI could further strengthen its position as an internationally inclusive Lean Six Sigma accreditation body and increase the accessibility of its approach in markets around the world.
The partnership could also expose ILSSI’s accreditation framework, Body of Knowledge, and certification model to a much larger network of training partners and professionals.
This could be particularly valuable in emerging markets, where access to internationally recognized Lean Six Sigma certification and accreditation frameworks may still be developing.
ILSSI could also gain additional support for its international community and activities, similar to the support it has already received for the 2026 International Lean Six Sigma Conference in Bratislava, where PECB is one of the sponsors.
Conclusion
Ultimately, the real impact will depend on what PECB and ILSSI decide to develop together. The two organizations have not yet publicly disclosed the concrete outcomes of the partnership, but if the collaboration results in a clearer and standardized Lean Six Sigma certification framework for PECB, it could be an important development for both organizations and their international networks.
